The column frames will just slide in between the top and bottom boxes and sit on the rubber bumpers. Passageways were cut out from the bottom parts of the columns that are on the built in cabinets. This is where the model train will pass through the columns.

Home Theater Columns-How To Conceal Your Speakers

A common method of attaching these pieces is to use the pocket screwing method. But if you are using an MDF board for the process, this may crack the board due to the drilling pressure. Instead of screwing, I glued the MDF boards and clamped them together to eliminate the risk of cracking. You would need four MDF boards of ¾ inch thickness for this project. First, cut them straight from the middle so that they become handier to work with. Use a circular saw to do all the cutting as it makes the task accurate and effortless.

I have a pretty big room and wanted to be able to place posters between each column. So, I spaced my faux columns approximately 3 feet apart – making sure that each end of the wall has the same space left over. Once you determine the spacing, you will need to glue and nail the MDF board in place. On that note, I have established this website to pass on my experience and knowledge in reforming the home of your dream. I have simplified the process of making a home theater column.

Your home theater can still function well with the home theater columns. After you install the shelves inside the column, nail the face frame on the side panels of the column. First, place the two side panels you have cut in a position in which you would place them on the wall. Then measure the gap between the two panels in which you would place the shelves. This measurement should be used for making the shelves.

Cut the top plate of the same width which is 5 inches high. But for this process, use a miter gauge and then trim them on the table saw. Then, you have to cut the side panels in 30 or 60-degree angles so that the top panel sits on them perfectly. This article intends to make the procedure simple and accurate for you.

Sonos One Review: Finally, a Smart Speaker That Sounds Great

If you’re used to talking to Alexa through an Echo speaker or Fire TV device, you already know that Alexa is pretty good at deciphering your requests and turning them into actions. Alexa isn’t perfect, though, so if you’re new to this, expect a bit of a learning curve when figuring out what Alexa can and can’t do. Routines are a set of tasks that Google Assistant can perform with a single voice command -- for example "Hey Google I'm Leaving" can turn off all of your lights and the TV.

For now, though, the Fire TV Cube has device control locked down, while the Beam has Alexa compatibility and AirPlay 2 support right out of the box and will add Google Assistant later this year. I would say this is in a step in the right direction for Sonos to meet the growing custom integration market, but I feel it’s a bit too little to late here. It finally hits the points installers have been asking for but doesn’t really break any new ground into what could have been an awesome and exciting product. Had we have seen more power, three channels, Alexa, and perhaps a phono stage, that would have been cool. The ability to add a turntable as a source into any Sonos system without a phono pre-amp would be awesome.

Happy Holidays and Thank You to all of our Secrets Supporters

But is the Beam as “Sonos simple” as the company’s prior products? I must admit, I was quite confused as to what Sonos is trying to accomplish with this new product. Yes, it has more power than the Connect Amp and I know it’s aimed at custom installers , but what else does it offer and is there a wow factor for homeowners? I did an A-B comparison of the new Amp and the old Connect Amp to see if I could hear the differences. Let’s see if the new Amp is worth the $100 premium over the old Connect Amp. It’s time to check out another new Sonos product, this time it’s the all new Sonos Amp.

I could also AirPlay through an AirPort Express if I had to. But it's not convenient, and convenience is the whole reason I went with Sonos.

Sonos One review

The Duran Duran live album "Arena" conjured up an impressive soundstage that wasn't apparent with a single speaker. Bass was surprisingly deep and the occasionally-challenging keyboard stings were held in check. Sonos' stereo mode works a lot better now than it used to, with none of the phasing effects of the past.

In the meantime the Sonos One offers the best combination of versatility, sound quality and affordability in any speaker you can buy, period. With excellent sound and the choice of Alexa or Google Assistant, the Sonos One reaffirms its place as the best smart speaker for the money. Finishing up with CDs and other two-channel music recordings from Radiohead and Drive-By Truckers, the Playbase didn't disappoint. David Bowie's final album, "Blackstar," sounded absolutely terrific, with pitch-perfect tight bass, lively dynamics and Bowie's vocal that all rang true.

Ended up selling everything and purchased an onkyo nr646 and full definitive technology 7.1 setup and voila, Theatre bliss. Trust me when I say this, don't waste your money on sonos products. They don't believe in what they're doing anymore and neither should you.

The LeEco "clawfoot" TV fit over the top of the Playbase just fine. Ty Pendlebury is a journalism graduate of RMIT Melbourne, and has worked at CNET since 2006. He lives in New York City where he writes about streaming and home audio. Prior to the latest Apple TV, you could just hook the optical directly to the Playbar, but of course they dropped the toslink.

While iPhone users can use Trueplay to setup this device, Android and other iPad users are in the dark. We chose to side with these users and leave the speaker uncalibrated, although we did adjust treble and bass according to each room's needs. And 65-inch Vizio D series worked best, straddling the Playbase with ample clearance, while a 55-inch TCL Roku TV and a 50-inch Vizio E-series didn't. If you want this style of speaker and your TV doesn't fit, there is a $150 third-party Playbase stand available.

I had thought about getting the playbar set up but there are two issues for me. While I admit, you can spend more, you can spend less as well and still get fairly decent sound. I purchased my 5.1 theater because I knew that all I had to do was on occasion purchase a new receiver and just hook the same speakers up to it. I will be the the first to admit that my system is getting a bit long in the tooth but I haven't had any trouble yet getting sound through. Of course, you can buy a simple Sonos One or Sonos Move if all you want is lots of music.

This is a really nicely made and minimally styled unit that blends in neatly. It can be wall-mounted using an optional mount or laid flat in front of your TV, with the built-in accelerometers automatically sensing the orientation and adjusting the sound accordingly. Despite the fact plenty of other players have entered the wireless, multi-room market, the Sonos proposition remains a very compelling one, thanks to a slick interface and a willingness to support new features and services. We've always applauded and respected Sonos for being different. But there now are plenty of similarly priced rivals, including from the company itself, so it's time to reconsider. Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you.

About a year after I bought it — and after the warranty expired — it started vomiting bogus high-definition copy protection errors and refusing to play any content from my Apple TV or Blu-Ray player. I spent a few weeks cursing and telling Hollywood where they could go shove their consumer hostility. But it's a shame the set-up can't handle DTS or any of the higher quality soundtracks such as Dolby TrueHD – the latter due to the limitations of the bandwith of the optical connection. The Playbar is capable of going pretty darn deep for a product of its type, too, although it does struggle with the very lowest bass note on the track.

Most smaller ones won't fit, however, so the potential audience for the Playbase is smaller than that of the Sonos Playbar, the company's more conventionally designed sound bar. Sonos is big on pointing out that its speakers connect via Wi-Fi, not Bluetooth, and while Wi-Fi has its distinct advantages, there’s no arguing Bluetooth is a convenience most folks want. Sonos added Bluetooth LE to the One for 2019, but it’s important to understand this is not for playing music — it’s simply for slightly faster setup.

HDMI at last, kind of

The Sonos Playbase is a low-slung sound base with impeccable design and impressive sound. Its bass is even better than the Playbar's, so there's no need for a sub. Sonos' app and other speakers make it part of one of the best multiroom systems available. I have a V1 Play 5 in the living room, a Play 3 in the Bedroom, and a couple of Play 1's.

Not only does it mean the system can now reach James Blake levels of bass with rousing power, it also adds weight to big movie effects and helps the whole presentation fill the room more thoroughly. The big question, of course, is how the Sonos Playbar sounds, so we kick off with a spot of Premier League football. If you do go for the standard laid down orientation, you also need to be aware that the Playbar’s feet don’t lift it very high, so it won’t straddle a TV pedestal in the way the Yamaha YSP-2500 helpfully does. Sonos offers a 1-year limited warranty on all of its products.

While iPhone users can use Trueplay to setup this device, Android and other iPad users are in the dark. If I was given the choice of buying a single Sonos Beam or two Ones, it'd be close. The Beam is great for home theater with its HDMI port but it's not so great at music. If you want to do home listening only then a pair of Ones is a superior choice. I actually owned the 5.1 setup but once I purchased an Nvidia shield android tv that supports pretty much everything. It only supports dolby and no software update will provide dts support .

I will say the Amp sounds more effortless than the Connect Amp, but that’s about it. Distortion seemed lower as well, but again, the difference was small. Although there is only a $100 price gap, I feel this represents just a minor revision of the Connect Amp, not an upgrade or serious improvement in sound and volume. The Amp is more squarely aimed at the custom integration market with its rack mount and cooler running temperature, but that’s where the differences end. Like other speakers of its kind, the Sonos One is a mono design, but as expected the sound got much better when I paired it with a second One.

sonos home theater review 2019

Other functions that Sonos can't yet perform but Google Assistant can include purchases and interpreter mode. Just like the Sonos Beam, the One doesn't let you choose between the assistants on the fly. In other words, the speaker won't respond to an "Alexa" command first and then a "Hey,Google" command immediately afterward. The wide effect needs breathing room -- unadorned walls, too, if you please.

A Sonos soundbar is as good a proposition as it seems

I expect you’re now thinking, “But I don’t need that much power to drive in-ceiling speakers,” and that’s true, the Connect Amp does the job just fine with 125 watts. But Sonos is showing off the Amp as an amp to drive your front speakers in your main setup. 125 watts just doesn’t cut it for larger tower speakers and some bookshelf speakers.

Mickey Mantle: The American Dream Comes To Life® Mickey Mantle's Career Home Runs

In September, Maris learned he was missing patches of hair in the back of his head. Maris and Mantle found humor from hurling music records from their balcony. They found amusement from reading newspaper reports of alleged fighting between the teammates and roommates, whose at-bats merited news bulletins. The two-bedroom apartment left an MVP sleeping on the living room couch. Commutes to The Bronx came in Maris’ Oldsmobile convertible. Rollie Sheldon has a photo on the wall of his Missouri home, commemorating his first victory on the mound as a rookie that season.

Failing that, and anyone hitting more than 60 during the 162 game schedule would have to carry some special mark or notation indicating that it was done during the longer schedule. Still, as the competition heated up between the M&M boys, the buzz among fans and press was increasingly about one or both of them breaking Ruth’s record. At the first All-Star game break of July (there were two All-Star games played at the time, the second coming in August), Maris was in the lead at 33 home runs with Mantle at 29. In Yankee Stadium on June 11th, Mantle hit an impressive upper deck home run against the Los Angeles Angels in the first inning of a second game doubleheader, giving Mantle the home run lead at 18 – but only momentarily. Two innings later, in the same game, Maris hit his 19th home run, followed by another in the seventh inning, raising his total to 20.

Mantle becomes sixth player to reach 500 home runs

At this point, the combined total of home runs hit by Maris and Mantle, 109, eclipsed the previous record set by a pair of teammates — Ruth and Gehrig at 107 –set back in 1927. Some of the media had also fabricated a rivalry between Maris and Mantle that didn’t exist. That was obviously good for selling newspapers and gaining TV share, but it wasn’t true. Mantle and Maris, along with Bob Cerv, a Yankee friend of Maris’s, lived together in a Queens apartment for most of the 1961 season. Maris and Cerv had in effect, rescued Mantle from his more freewheeling lifestyle and Times Square hangovers, when he lived downtown at the St. Moritz hotel.

Less than two weeks earlier, he’d gone seven straight games without homering. As the Yankees battled the Orioles in The Bronx, Maris went shopping with his wife in Manhattan. The infamous asterisk was never official, erroneously earning infamy after a question to Frick from sportswriter Dick Young.

Chicago – Pitcher: Billy Pierce, Chicago White Sox –

Inside the magazine, a several-page story featured Mantle and Maris in separate photos, each swinging mightily for the fences. On August 11, Mantle hit his 44 and Maris his 42 in Washington, D.C. Game against the Senators, as the Yankees had won nine in a row. The Yankee win streak ended the next day, as they lost to the Senators, but Maris hit his 43rd. By August 13th, with Maris homering twice and Mantle once during a doubleheader with the Senators, the Yankee duo were then tied at 45 home runs a piece and still ahead of Ruth’s pace. Maris was then having a bit of a hitless stretch over some 19 at-bats in six games.

The first main series #7 card not issued to Mantle or a Yankee was to shortstop Orlando Arcia of the Milwaukee Brewers in 2021. Although he was a feared power hitter from either side of the plate and hit more home runs batting left-handed than right, Mantle considered himself a better right-handed hitter. In roughly 25% of his total at-bats he hit .330 right-handed to .281 left. His 372 to-164 home run disparity was due to Mantle having batted left-handed much more often, as the large majority of pitchers are right-handed. Overall, he hit slightly more home runs away than home . Mantle hit .237 with 18 home runs and 54 RBI during his final season in 1968.

Player News

He was selected an AL All-Star and pinch-hit at the All-Star Game on July 11. Mantle was selected an All-Star every season during his 18-year career except 1951 and 1966, and did not play in the 1952, 1963, and 1965 seasons. After a brief slump, Mantle was sent down to the Yankees' top farm team, the Kansas City Blues. However, he was not able to find the power he once had in the lower minors.

The crowds swell in the summer, when the sun accepts a starring role and baseball is most firmly entrenched in our identities. Tourists come from all over — from the Great Plains, from New York, from the major league city a 3½-hour drive away — to visit the Midwest monument. But after his last two seasons in 1967 and 1968, in which he saw a significant dip in batting average, runs scored, home runs and slugging percentage, a slugger who had once seemed larger than life was starting to seem more human. Red Patterson, the same PR director who measured Mickey's epic Griffith Stadium shot 11 days earlier, also paced off this homer. However, he measured it only from the base of the house the ball struck. That distance is 494 feet, but the ball hit the porch at least 15 feet above the ground.

Mantle, still recovering from his infected hip, made a few appearances in two of the games with one hit. Maris played all five games, went 4 for 19, with a home run and double, scoring 4 runs. October 2, 1961, New York Daily News headlines and photos show Roger Maris coming out of the dugout to tip his hat to Yankee Stadium fans after hitting his 1961 season record 61st home run.

On August 30th and 31st, Mantle got back on track, hitting home runs Nos. 47 and 48 in back-to-back games at Minnesota. Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris were much alike on one level, both coming from the Midwest, raised in working class families, with similar high school athletic stardom, and both marrying their high school sweethearts. Yet, in terms of personality and lifestyle, they were quite different. Mantle was more outgoing and gregarious than Maris, and liked being in the limelight.

Busch Stadium

Paul Borders, a Brooks employee, saw exactly where the ball landed. Susman and fellow researcher Robert Schiewe calculated the distance through Schiewe's use of the Pythagorean Theorem. This is the longest home run to have actually been measured from the point it was hit to the point at which it landed. Although it was measured after the fact, the point of impact was well-known and we believe this distance to be completely reliable. This is the distance the ball traveled in the air from home plate to the place where it landed.

After fouling off a few pitches, he hit a towering home run over the 402-foot sign by the bullpen. During the 1957 World Series, Milwaukee Braves second baseman Red Schoendienst fell on Mantle's left shoulder in a collision at second base. Over the next decade, Mantle experienced increasing difficulty hitting from his left side. In 1950, Mantle was promoted to the Class-C Joplin Miners of the Western Association. Mantle won the Western Association batting title, with a .383 average. He also hit 26 home runs and recorded 136 runs batted in.

A fan favorite, he was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974. His first, in May 1951 against the White Sox, was estimated at 440 feet. Estimates of his longest home run range as high as 700 feet, with stories of tape measures being used to calculate home runs such as a 565-foot home run against the Senators in 1953. Mantle’s most home runs against any team are the 77 he hit against the Athletics. His most as a visitor in another ballpark are the 42 he hit at Briggs Stadium in Detroit, followed by the 38 he hit at Fenway Park.

Roger Maris settled in for a more middling career during the next seven years of his baseball life. Continuing with the Yankees in 1962, Roger Maris hit 33 homers, 100 RBIs, and batted .256. He was also named to the All-Star team for a fourth straight year. In 1963 in 90 games, he hit 23 homers and 53 RBIs as the Yankees won their fourth straight pennant. The following year, Maris had some improvement, hitting .281 with 26 homers and 71 RBIs, meeting the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. Still, as the season began, no one was flatly predicting that either Maris or Mantle, or anyone else, would hit 61 home runs that year.

Comiskey Park,

Mantle was a prized guest at baseball-card shows, commanding fees far in excess of those of any other player for his appearances and autographs. Mantle insisted that the promoters of baseball-card shows always include one of the lesser-known Yankees of his era, such as Moose Skowron or Hank Bauer, so that they could also earn money for their appearances. During the 1961 season, Mantle and teammate Roger Maris, known as the M&M Boys, chased Babe Ruth's 1927 single-season home run record.

Because of these comparatively low numbers , he took a salary cut of 10,000 dollars, down to 60,000 dollars. In 1960 Mantle started in both All-Star games, getting two walks in the first and a single in the second game. Mantle had another "off year", - indeed, the first week of June saw his batting average drop to .228—although by mid-August, he was back in his prime, leading the team to another World Series.

Fanovich, with the bases loaded behind him, fired a thigh-high fastball right down the middle. Mickey clobbered it, sending it high over the roof of the second deck in left-center-field. The ball cleared the roof by a good 25 feet, went over Somerset Street outside, and was never seen again. It was one of the longest home runs in Philadelphia history. By 1965, the Yankees were not the dynasty Yankees of old, finishing in sixth place. Mantle, meanwhile, was slowed by injuries that year, batting .255 with 19 home runs and 46 RBIs.

In the Detroit series, September 16th and 17th, and he hit a couple of long balls that almost made it out. Life magazine, then one of the premiere news and lifestyle sources of its day, runs a featured cover story on the Mantle and Maris race to upend Ruth’s record. Mantle got off to a strong start in April, hitting seven round trippers.

(No estimate has been made of the distance of that Mantle homer, which may well end up in the top ten if ever calculated.) It was the year Mickey won baseball's Triple Crown, challenging Babe Ruth's home run record in the process. He ended up with 52, one of the few players to hit over 50 homers in a season. The Yankees traveled next to Baltimore, Babe Ruth’s hometown to play the Orioles. There, Maris had some rough at bats in the first game of a doubleheader on September 19th. The second game was the 154th game of the season, in which he could equal or exceed Ruth. But there would be no Roger Maris home runs in that game either.

Joe DiMaggio makes his big league debut, recording three hits in the Yankees’ win

But behind the scenes, there was a high-stakes drama in play as well, and it was taking a toll on both hitters, especially Maris. Still, Maris always took time to talk with the press – multiple times a day in some cases as the race heated up with reporters camped out at his locker – often subject to repeated and inane questioning. While the harsh treatment he received from fans and press did bother and upset him, it also helped steel him in his quest for the record. Numerous Yankee baseball fans, as well, did not want to see Ruth’s record upended. "1 more" is all they need, say the boys, but it was not to be, as the Pirates pulled off one of the most exciting World Series finishes in baseball history.

During the stretch, he battled flu-like symptoms, prompting broadcaster Mel Allen to make an appointment for him with Dr. Max Jacobson on the team’s off day on Sept. 25. They appeared in a pair of movies (“Safe at Home” and “That Touch of Mink”). They were a daily presence, alongside Ruth, in countless newspapers across the country, listing their respective home run totals on that date. Bothered by injuries for most of his career, Mantle retired after 18 seasons with the Yankees at the age of 36.

Using geometric calculations, it would have ended up across Trumbull Avenue, approximately 650 feet from the plate. In 2006, Mantle was featured on a United States postage stamp, one of a series of four including fellow baseball legends Mel Ott, Roy Campanella, and Hank Greenberg. During the final years of his life, Mantle purchased a condominium on Lake Oconee near Greensboro, Georgia, near Greer Johnson's home, and frequently stayed there for months at a time. He occasionally attended the local Methodist church, and sometimes ate Sunday dinner with members of the congregation.

Mantle received one of Dr. Jacobson’s shots, ostensibly to knock out the virus, but the needle had hit Mantle’s hip bone, causing an abscess on his side that would later have to be lanced and drained. By September 28th, Mantle was taken to the hospital where he was treated for an infected hip, as doctors excised and packed the abscess. Mantle was effectively knocked out of the home run race, hospitalized for the final week of the season. Like Maris, Mantle had played running back as a high school football player, but baseball was his passion, instilled by his father who had worked with him as a young boy, insisting he become a switch hitter.

Although his batting average was his lowest since his rookie year, his league-leading 40 home runs and 94 runs batted in, saw him come in a close second to Roger Maris’ MVP award. In 1965 Roger Maris was out with an injury for all but 46 games, though he rebounded somewhat in 1966, playing 119 games hitting 13 homers. Maris, in addition to a painful hand injury and declining production, had his age-old troubles with the press and Yankee fans who thought him a slacker when he didn’t produce. That December, Maris was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals, becoming a part-time right fielder there, hitting 14 homers with 100 RBI over two seasons. However, in the 1967 World Series, he hit .385 with seven RBIs for the Cardinals in their victory over the Boston Red Sox in seven games. Maris hit his 275th and final regular season home run on September 5, 1968.

The sports pages throughout the nation were full of “home run battle” reporting. Television, too, was enjoying the “home run fever,” with more viewers tuning in. Mickey Mantle, a switch-hitter, showing his power from the right side of the plate, capable of 'distant shot' home runs of 500 feet or more. The Mantle-Maris cover photo was taken by photographer Philippe Halsman, while the ghostly background photo of Ruth from earlier times had been taken by William Greene.

Five years earlier, in 1956, Mantle had challenged Ruth's record for most of the season, and the New York press had been protective of Ruth on that occasion also. When Mantle finally fell short, finishing with 52, many of the traditionalists were relieved. In the 1960 season, he hit what is still believed to be the longest home run in history.

With the Yankees behind 1-0 Mickey laid into a Ramos fastball and got it all. The ball took off in a high drive toward right-field that looked like it might have a chance to become the first ball to go completely out of Yankee Stadium. It soared above the stadium roof but a stiff breeze cut at it and brought it down against the right-field façade, about 18 inches from clearing the roof.

By the time Roger Maris arrived in 1960, Mantle’s heroics had already put him on the covers of Time, Life, and Sports Illustrated magazines, and often in the headlines of the New York sports pages. In 1956, Mantle posted a .353 batting average, slammed 52 homers, and drove in 130 runs, winning the Triple Crown, a rare baseball achievement. At that time, in fact, he was only the twelfth player in baseball history to have won it. And to date, Mantle is the last Triple Crown winner to have led all of Major League Baseball in all three Triple Crown categories. First of all very nice & cozy place and high quality products used. I went in to have my eyebrows tinted and the lady who did them did a nice job for a cheap price. It was quiet, but I put it down to other better known salons having the business. Very good quality service and Therapists are exceptional.
