Sonos One Review: Finally, a Smart Speaker That Sounds Great

If you’re used to talking to Alexa through an Echo speaker or Fire TV device, you already know that Alexa is pretty good at deciphering your requests and turning them into actions. Alexa isn’t perfect, though, so if you’re new to this, expect a bit of a learning curve when figuring out what Alexa can and can’t do. Routines are a set of tasks that Google Assistant can perform with a single voice command -- for example "Hey Google I'm Leaving" can turn off all of your lights and the TV.

For now, though, the Fire TV Cube has device control locked down, while the Beam has Alexa compatibility and AirPlay 2 support right out of the box and will add Google Assistant later this year. I would say this is in a step in the right direction for Sonos to meet the growing custom integration market, but I feel it’s a bit too little to late here. It finally hits the points installers have been asking for but doesn’t really break any new ground into what could have been an awesome and exciting product. Had we have seen more power, three channels, Alexa, and perhaps a phono stage, that would have been cool. The ability to add a turntable as a source into any Sonos system without a phono pre-amp would be awesome.

But is the Beam as “Sonos simple” as the company’s prior products? I must admit, I was quite confused as to what Sonos is trying to accomplish with this new product. Yes, it has more power than the Connect Amp and I know it’s aimed at custom installers , but what else does it offer and is there a wow factor for homeowners? I did an A-B comparison of the new Amp and the old Connect Amp to see if I could hear the differences. Let’s see if the new Amp is worth the $100 premium over the old Connect Amp. It’s time to check out another new Sonos product, this time it’s the all new Sonos Amp.

I could also AirPlay through an AirPort Express if I had to. But it's not convenient, and convenience is the whole reason I went with Sonos.

Sonos One review

The Duran Duran live album "Arena" conjured up an impressive soundstage that wasn't apparent with a single speaker. Bass was surprisingly deep and the occasionally-challenging keyboard stings were held in check. Sonos' stereo mode works a lot better now than it used to, with none of the phasing effects of the past.

The ability to choose between the two major voice systems further ups the One's appeal, especially to Google households. Shop your favorite products and we’ll find the best deal with a single click. I love Sonos and it works great for TV based Home Cinema but if you are using a projector or a TV that doesn't have an Optical out then you are in trouble.

The voice

Apart from the optical cable, the only other connections are Wi-Fi and Ethernet. Unlike most competitors, the Sonos lacks a Bluetooth connection, but due to the number of music services Sonos supports, we don't think you'll miss it. A sound base is a flat box of a speaker designed to sit underneath a TV's stand.

In the meantime the Sonos One offers the best combination of versatility, sound quality and affordability in any speaker you can buy, period. With excellent sound and the choice of Alexa or Google Assistant, the Sonos One reaffirms its place as the best smart speaker for the money. Finishing up with CDs and other two-channel music recordings from Radiohead and Drive-By Truckers, the Playbase didn't disappoint. David Bowie's final album, "Blackstar," sounded absolutely terrific, with pitch-perfect tight bass, lively dynamics and Bowie's vocal that all rang true.

Sonos vs. Echo vs. Google Home

Ended up selling everything and purchased an onkyo nr646 and full definitive technology 7.1 setup and voila, Theatre bliss. Trust me when I say this, don't waste your money on sonos products. They don't believe in what they're doing anymore and neither should you.

The LeEco "clawfoot" TV fit over the top of the Playbase just fine. Ty Pendlebury is a journalism graduate of RMIT Melbourne, and has worked at CNET since 2006. He lives in New York City where he writes about streaming and home audio. Prior to the latest Apple TV, you could just hook the optical directly to the Playbar, but of course they dropped the toslink.

While iPhone users can use Trueplay to setup this device, Android and other iPad users are in the dark. We chose to side with these users and leave the speaker uncalibrated, although we did adjust treble and bass according to each room's needs. And 65-inch Vizio D series worked best, straddling the Playbase with ample clearance, while a 55-inch TCL Roku TV and a 50-inch Vizio E-series didn't. If you want this style of speaker and your TV doesn't fit, there is a $150 third-party Playbase stand available.

I had thought about getting the playbar set up but there are two issues for me. While I admit, you can spend more, you can spend less as well and still get fairly decent sound. I purchased my 5.1 theater because I knew that all I had to do was on occasion purchase a new receiver and just hook the same speakers up to it. I will be the the first to admit that my system is getting a bit long in the tooth but I haven't had any trouble yet getting sound through. Of course, you can buy a simple Sonos One or Sonos Move if all you want is lots of music.
